# 1940 – France is forced to sign the Second Compiègne armistice with Germany.
# 1941 – Germany invades the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa.
# 1954 – The murder of a New Zealand housewife, Honora Parker, upsets the world: she is beaten to death by her own 16 year old daughter Pauline Parker together with her girlfriend Juliet Hulme, a case later on made into the movie Heavenly Creatures (1994).
# 1957 – The Soviet Union launches R-12 missile for the first time (in Kapustin Yar).
# 1962 – An Air France Boeing 707 jet crashes in bad weather in Guadeloupe, West Indies killing 113.
# 1969 – The Cuyahoga River catches fire, which triggers a crack-down on pollution in the river.
# 1976 – Canadian House of Commons abolishes capital punishment.
