On the 18th of September a gas station attendet recived a 10 dollar gold certificat, the clerk was suspicious that the bill wasn´t any good for paying so he wrote up the registration number of the car.
The description of the man fitted the description of the man that had been paying whit money from the ransom.
The licenseplate number was registred to one Bruno Richard Hauptman 1279 East 222nd Street Bronx New York.
After the disovery authorities closley surveilled Hauptmans house. In the morning of the 19 September 1934 a man left the house fitting the description of ”John” from Dr. Condon, and the description from the gas station attendentat left his house and where going to drive away.
Officers where quickley at the scene and he was taken in to custody.
The man was Bruno Richard Hauptman, after the arrest investigators ransacked Hauptmans home, teared down outhouses looking for evidence.
In a shoebox in a closet around 14.000$ from the ransom money where found.
In one closet the investigators found the name,adress and phonenumber of John Condon
It was also discoverd that a floorboard where missing from the attic in the house.
The floorboard where later matched to be a part of the ladder found close to the Lindbergh home.
Hauptman never confessed to the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh Jr.
He even said no when he was offered one milion for a confession.
Hauptman claimed that he had noted Condon´s name, adress and phone number since he was intressed in the case.
He also said that he was storing some items for a friend (Isidor Fish) who had left the US and traveled to Europe.
Fish had been in dept to Hauptman so when Hauptman discoverd the money he took it. And by that he claimed to not have anything to do whit the crime.
