It was just luck that prevented a nuclearwar
said Robert McNamara at the time of Cuba Missilcrise he was the US minister of defence.
During the crise he was one of the closest men to president John F Kennedy, thirty years later he was invited to havanna where he meet his former enemy Fidel Castro.
During the meeting in 1992 McNamara for the first time got the knowledge that the sovjetunion smuggled in 163 nuclearwarheads to Cuba, weapons the CIA didn´t know about. If they would have the knowledge they would try to prevent Kennedy to play such a high game and the order of a blocade against Cuba. When the crise reached it peak Fidel Castro wanted Chrustjtjov to fire the weapons, even if that would mean that Cuba would be totaly wiped out.
