Are you one of those who keeps forgetting to return the librarybooks you borrowed? Then you are in good company. In 1789 George Washington, the first president of the United States of America left the New York Society Library whit two books, ”Law of Nations” and a book about debates in the British House of Commons.
Washington never returned those books, and acording to some sources the debt is about $4.000 whit a rate of 2 pence a day counting since 2nd November 1789. But then inflation is not counted in that amount so it could be much higher.
But the library aren´t so intrested in the money, they just want their books back. But that is most likely impossible since the books have been lost in history ever since.
